2006 OKLAHOMA CHAMPIONS ANNOUNCED

On Saturday, July 28th the Thoroughbred champions for Oklahoma were presented at the 22nd Annual Oklahoma Thoroughbred Association Awards Presentation at Remington Park. A dinner, dancing and entertainment were provided for attendees, as well as live and silent auctions of racing and non-racing items.

Master of Ceremonies Chris Lincoln, noted ESPN thoroughbred commentator and racing enthusiast, presented the winners of the various categories as well as the winners of the Oklahoma Bred champions as presented by the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission.

The Oklahoma Thoroughbred Association had evaluated horses bred in Oklahoma to determine the finalists and selected the following winners in each category.

The Horse of the Year Award was awarded to Kip Deville, a grey son of Kipling, who was also voted the Three Year Old Colt or Gelding, and Champion Turf Horse. He had a very productive 2006 and earned $456,092 from 11 starts with 5 wins, 1 second, and 1 third. Included in his race record were wins in the Grade 3 Sir Beaufort Stakes at Santa Anita, the Grand Prairie Turf Challenge at Lone Star Park, the Bryan Station Stakes at Keeneland and the Texas Heritage Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park. He also finished second in the Colonial Cup at Colonial Downs. Present to accept the awards was Mike Scherack of IEAH Stables, the New York-based owners of Kip Deville.

Other winners presented during the evening were Duh Nuts, Champion 2 year old Colt; Charlie Sioux, Champion 2 year old Filly; Starry Pie and Jazzy Okie, 3 year old Filly Co-champions; Marq French, Champion Older Colt or Gelding and Champion Sprinter; D Fine Okie, Older Filly or Mare.

The Leading Stallion Award went to Kipling, and the Broodmare Of The Year was Klondike Kaytie, dam of Kip Deville. The Leading Oklahoma Breeders award went to the Richter Family Trust, (John & Kris Richter), who had five stakes horses from 23 starters in 2006.
